Ullswater, The Lake District

Ullswater is located only a short drive from Appleby Manor Country House Hotel. Ullswater is the second largest lake in the English Lake District and is arguably one of the most beautiful of all the Lakes. Ullswater has a picture postcard backdrop, surrounded by magnificent mountains of the Lake District, lush green fields and woodlands all magnificently reflected in the glassy water of Ullswater.

Appleby Manor Hotel suggests one of the best ways to enjoy Ullswater is onboard the Ullswater Steamer where you can enjoy a magical trip and soak up the magnificent Lakeland scenery. The steamer tours up and down the Lake from Glenridding on Ullswater's southern shores, to the northern tip of Ullswater to Pooley Bridge. The small quaint villages around offer an array of restaurants and craft and souvenir shops.

Ullswater offers visitors an array of outdoor holiday activities from sailing, windsurfing, fishing, rock climbing or walking in the surrounding Lakeland mountains - whether a short walk or a more strenuous challenging fell walk there is something to suit all levels of abilities.

There are dramatic walks around Aira Force waterfall, renowned in Victorian times as a beauty spot and still just as magnificent. The main force falls 70 feet from below a stone footbridge. There are steps and slopes to the waterfall at Aira Force, so it may prove difficult for families with pushchair's. Aira Force, is on the west side of Ullswater, near Dockray (on land owned by the National Trust) and is probably one of the most famous waterfalls in the Lake District.

William Wordsworth was a frequent visitor to the Ullswater area and wrote several poems about Aira Force the most well known being 'The Somnambulist'. Although not recorded it is almost certain that the early spring daffodils in the woods and near the waterside at Gowbarrow Park were the inspiration for Wordsworths famous poem daffodils:

"I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.."

Whether it's Spring and Summer with the rare beautiful wild flowers or Autumn with the autumnal gold's of the woodlands or Winter with the icing sugar capped mountains the changing seasons bring unique dramatic changes to the area none of which should be missed.

Following a day out on Ullswater retreat back to the luxury accommodation of Appleby Manor Country House Hotel and enjoy a relaxing swim in the swimming pool, or a drink in the lounge or award-winning gardens and enjoy wonderful food at our award-winning restaurant.
